My View

Seriously, when was the last time you picked up one of those things?

Well, I'm guessing it's been a while. So I'm taking this into my own hands, figuratively of course since this is cyberspace and I can't do anything literally (you'd know what figuratively and literally meant if you read books more often idiot), and I'm going to recommend some books that I've read myself recently.

Note: Due to the fact that Freewebs is retarded and doesn't have a little star symbol, instead of giving a book a rating of stars, I will be giving a rating of hearts (♥). It's a scale of 1-5, five being the best book ever 1 being a waste of time.

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Back Cover Description: Sophie lived in the twon of Market Chipping, which was in INgary, a land in which anything cuold happen, and often did---especially when the Witch of the Waste got her dander up. Which was often.
As her younger sisters set out to seek their fortunes, Sophi stayed in her father's hat shop. Which proved most unadventurous, until the Witch of the Waste came in to buy a bonnet, but was not pleased. Which is why she turned Sophie into an old lady. Which was spiteful witchery.
Now Sophie must seek her own fortune. Which means striking a bargain with the lecherous Wizard Howl. Which means entering his ever-moving castle, taming a blue fire-demon, and meeting the Witch of the Waste head-on. Which was more than Sophie bargained for....

Now I'm sure that many Miyazaki fans are jumping up and down right now at the sight of this title. You're probably saying "Oh oh oh! I know this! It's a movie!!!!! I LOVE that movie!" Well I understand your excitement, I was like that as well when I first spotted this book in the book store as I was previously unaware that it was a book first. Naturally, I had to read it and let me tell you now, it is nothing like the movie! It was hard to have an unbiased opinion while reading the book because I was so accustomed to the movie version but after I finished reading it and I thought about it more, I realized that I liked it. So all you Howl fans out there, I definitely recommend this read for you as well as for all you other people out there who may find the plot interesting.

Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley

Back Cover Description: Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage.
When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"
Robin McKinley's beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple: Beauty and the Beast.

Having always been of lover of this fairy tale, and a fan of the Disney movie I was drawn to this book when I saw it. As soon as I opened the book and read the first page I was drawn into the story. It was hard for me to put the book down. This retelling of the classic tale Beauty and the Beast I can only describe as breathtaking and enchanting and definitely a good use of time...unless you're one of those murder story sci-fi types. Then you're just S.O.L.

Kissing the Rain by Kevin Brooks

Back Cover Description: Everyone thinks of Moo Nelson as a nobody. They tease him. Shove him. Call him names. There's only one place he can escape: the bridge. High above the traffic, Moo can watch the world go by and not owrry about anything else.
Until he witnesses a car chase. And a murder.
Suddenly everyone---gangsters and police officers, friends and foes---wants the truth from Moo. Or some version of the truth. But Moo isn't sure what's true anymore. He must decide beween fact and fiction, loyalty and loneliness, justice and retirbution. And he must do it soon....

Okay I must say that this book was the greatest waste of money ever. I LOVE Kevin Brooks, I've read some of his other works and they were fantastic novels, but this book was highly disappointing. The grammar the character used was very distracting and sometimes hard to understand. I can appreciate that Kevin Brooks was trying to get the reader into the mind of the character and everything, but this was just too much. It made me truly hate the book as I forced myself through. The plot was fairly interesting I suppose but it didn't make up for everything. However this may just be my opinion of this book, some of you may find it invigorating and easier to understand. so if the plot drags you in go ahead and check it out, you may like it.

Love and Other Four-Letter Words by Carolyn Mackler

Back Cover Description: With her parents splitting up, sixteen-year-old Sammie Davis doesn't want to feel a thing, but feelings happen. For starters, she's plenty angry. Her dad's leaving their upstate New York home to move clear across the country. Her mom's packing them up and relocating to New York City. And Sammie has no say about any of it.
Overnight, Sammie is forced to deal with change. And one change spawns another: Roles get reversed, old and new friendships tested, and sexual feelings awakened. It's a scary time. But as Sammie realizes that things can't stay the same forever, that even the people she loves and trusts the most can disappoint her, she beings to accept that change isn't always bad. It's how you cope, jumbled feelings and all, that counts. And as she copes, Sammie's sense of self emerges proud and strong.

Although I have never been the child in the middle of a tragic sudden divorce, this book sure does make me feel like I am right in the middle of this tragic story. Sammie is a funny character who is easy to relate to for all teen girls. You journey along with Sammie as she goes through different emotions and stages.
